How to send a 50 GB file

At 20 Mbps upload, 50 GB takes about five and a half hours. At 100 Mbps, just over an hour. That rules out email, and it sits right at iCloud Drive's 50 GB per-file limit, so send a link that streams the file from your computer instead.

Numbers checked Oktober 2026. Each one links to where it came from.

How to send it

  1. Check their free space

They need a bit more than 50 GB free on the disk the download lands on. A phone often doesn't have it; a laptop usually does.

  2. Plug in and stop sleep

A 50 GB transfer can run for hours. Plug the laptop in and set it not to sleep while it's on power. A cable to the router helps too.

  3. Drop it and send the link

Drop the file on download.fyi, copy the link and send it. Keep the tab open until it's done.

How long it takes

Your upload speed sets the pace. These are best-case times at full speed; real transfers run a little slower.

Tips

  • Start it before you go to bed. Five hours overnight costs you nothing.

  • Video and photos are already compressed. Zipping a 50 GB video makes it barely smaller, so don't wait for it.

  • If they'll download it later, a 14-day pass for $5 covers up to 100 GB, so 50 GB fits with room to spare. You upload once and can close the tab.

  • Moving it on a USB stick afterwards? A FAT32 stick can't hold it. Reformat as exFAT first.

Questions

How long does it take to send 50 GB?

About 5 hours 33 minutes at 20 Mbps upload, 1 hour 7 minutes at 100 Mbps and 7 minutes at 1 Gbps, at full speed. Real transfers run a little slower.

Can I put 50 GB in iCloud Drive?

Only just, if at all: Apple puts the limit at 50 GB for a single file or folder. Anything over it shows as ineligible and doesn't upload.

Can I send 50 GB by email?

No. Email attachments stop at a few tens of megabytes. Send a link instead.

Does the recipient need to stay online too?

For a live transfer, yes: you're both online while it streams. If that doesn't work, a pass uploads the file so they can download it whenever they like.
