How long will it take?

Enter a file size and a connection speed to see how long a download or upload takes.

At full speed, that takes

13 min 20 s

100 Mbps moves about 13 Mo every second.

Real transfers usually run a little slower than the advertised speed.

The math

Connection speeds are sold in megabits per second (Mbps). File sizes are measured in megabytes (MB). There are 8 bits in a byte, so a 100 Mbps connection moves at most 12.5 MB per second.

The calculator multiplies the size by 8 and divides by the speed. A 10 GB file at 100 Mbps takes 800 seconds: 13 minutes and 20 seconds.

Why real downloads take longer

  • Every connection spends some of its speed on its own bookkeeping.
  • Other devices and people on the same network share the speed.
  • Upload speeds are often much lower than download speeds, and a transfer can only go as fast as the slower end.
  • Wi-Fi far from the router is slower than a cable.

Questions

What's the difference between Mbps and MB/s?
Mbps is megabits per second, the unit internet plans use. MB/s is megabytes per second, the unit most download windows show. 1 MB/s is 8 Mbps.
Does it use 1000 or 1024?
1000, the way internet providers and drive makers count. 1 GB here is 1,000,000,000 bytes.
What's the fastest way to send a big file?
Send it directly. download.fyi streams a file from your browser to theirs, so it travels once at the speed of the slower connection, instead of uploading first and downloading after.
