File size limits

Teams shares files up to 250 GB

250 GB per file, because Teams doesn't really attach files: it saves them to SharePoint or OneDrive and shares them from there. You can attach up to 10 files to a chat message.

What happens when it's too big

Attach more than 10 files to a chat message and Teams shows an error. Microsoft doesn't say what you'll see for a single file that's too big.

Files in a channel go to the team's SharePoint site; files in a chat go to your OneDrive for Business, shared with the people in that chat. So the real limits are SharePoint's and OneDrive's: 250 GB a file, and whatever storage your organization has left.

Microsoft Teams's own way round it

There isn't a separate workaround, because Teams already shares files as links. For very large files, Microsoft suggests the OneDrive sync app over uploading in the browser.

On the free personal version of Teams, documents share 5 GB of storage.

Or skip the upload

When the file is bigger than your OneDrive has room for, or the person isn't in your organization, send a download.fyi link. Drop the file, paste the link into the chat, and it streams from your computer to theirs.

Nothing is stored in SharePoint, and nobody needs a Microsoft account to open it.

Questions

Why does Microsoft list both 100 MB and 250 GB for Teams?

Microsoft's chat limits table has a "file size limitation" of 100 MB without saying what it covers. The 250 GB figure is the per-file upload limit for SharePoint and OneDrive, which is where Teams keeps shared files.

Where do files I send in a Teams chat go?

To your OneDrive for Business, shared with the people in the chat. Files posted in a channel go to the team's SharePoint site.

Can I email a file into a Teams channel?

Yes, up to 20 attachments per email, each under 10 MB.
