How to send a 100 GB file

100 GB takes about 11 hours at 20 Mbps upload and under 45 minutes at 300 Mbps. iCloud Drive won't take it and email is out of the question. Send it as one link that streams from your computer, or upload it once with a pass and close the laptop.

How to send it

  1. Work out the time first

Find your upload speed and check the table below. If it's over a few hours, decide now: send it live overnight, or upload it once with a pass.

  2. Live: drop it, keep the tab open

Drop the file on download.fyi and send the link. Plug in, stop the computer sleeping, and leave the tab open until they have it.

  3. Or keep it: buy a pass

With a pass the file uploads, encrypted in your browser, and the same link keeps working for 14 or 30 days. They download when it suits them.

How long it takes

Your upload speed sets the pace. These are best-case times at full speed; real transfers run a little slower.

Tips

  • Don't split it into parts unless you have to. One file and one link is less to go wrong than ten.

  • Not every system counts a gigabyte the same way: some count 1,073,741,824 bytes, others 1,000,000,000. A file shown as 100 GB can be up to 107 GB in the other units, so if it's close, the 30-day pass (up to 500 GB) leaves room.

  • Check they have more than 100 GB free where the download lands before you start.

  • An overnight live transfer is free. Leave the laptop plugged in, with the lid open if it sleeps when closed.
