What happens when it's too big

Slack doesn't document what happens over 1 GB, and it doesn't offer to turn the file into a link. You'll need to send it some other way.

On a free workspace, mind the 90-day window: a file shared in January is out of view by April, and deleted after a year.

Slack's own way round it

Slack's help pages don't offer one for files over 1 GB. The common route is to upload to a cloud drive and paste the link, which means waiting for the upload and paying for the space.

Or skip the upload

Drop the file into download.fyi and paste the three-word link into the channel. It streams from your computer straight to them, at any size, encrypted end to end on the way.

It also works for people outside your workspace, which Slack's own file links only do on paid plans.

Questions

What's the biggest file I can upload to Slack?

1 GB per file, and up to 10 files at a time.

Does the free version of Slack delete files?

Free workspaces show the most recent 90 days of messages and files, and delete anything more than a year old.

Can I share a Slack file with someone outside the workspace?

Only on paid plans, which can create external file links. A download.fyi link works for anyone.
